Free RPG Day is coming … possibly

Free RPG Day 2011Each year on the heels of Free Comic Book Day comes Free RPG Day, when many publishers of pen-and-paper roleplaying games such as Dungeons & Dragons (to name just one) offer up quick-start versions of their rules or compatible adventure modules or other accessories to get people into local hobby shops and exploring their products.

This year it falls on Saturday, June 18. So far, as I write this on Tuesday before heading out on vacation, the only Valley store that comes up on the map of participating retailers is Samurai Comics in Phoenix. Many stores choose not to participate, even though publishers are donating products, because there is still time and money involved in packing and shipping — after all, nothing is ever truly free, right?

I asked around and some East Valley games shops weren’t even aware of it, so maybe the marketing agency behind the whole thing has its work cut out for it.

Anyway, here’s the current list of offerings from various publishers — there’s some primo stuff there, if you can find it, to lure people to the hobby shops. And if you’re a FLGS (friendly local gaming store) who is participating in Free RPG Day, leave a note in the comments below and tell us what’s going on!
