It’s still three weeks before the first Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them movie hits theaters, but we’re already getting a few hints about where the series will go in film No. 2 – including a promised appearance by a young Albus Dumbledore.
Dumbledore will be referenced in the first movie, but director David Yates confirmed to movie magazine SFX last weekend we’ll see the Hogwarts professor in the second installment, according to SnitchSeeker and MuggleNet.
According to the two outlets, Yates described the connection between the Potter and Fantastic Beasts stories as follows:
“The worlds are connected, and there are characters that exist in both. [We hear of] Dumbledore in this film, and we see him in the next part of the trilogy [note, this was reported on before the five movies were confirmed earlier this month]. He teaches at Hogwarts…
“The scenes that Jo has written are lovely. The younger Dumbledore is delightful. He’s very mischievous and enormous fun and a bit of a political animal. I’m yet to cast him. I’ve got a couple of ideas, though…”
Dumbledore would be 45 in 1926, which is when the first film takes place, so keep that age in mind as you start speculating which actor might appear as a young Dumbledore.
And a different magazine suggests the setting for the second film is Paris, MuggleNet reports.
That tidbit came out in Thursday’s Empire Magazine – which not only features interviews with Yates, J.K. Rowling and Newt Scamander actor Eddie Redmayne, it also boasts a limited-edition video cover styled to look like American wizarding newspaper The New York Ghost.
But first, the first film…
All the secrets to the first Fantastic Beasts will be revealed when it premieres Nov. 18 – but that’s still three whole weeks fans can keep looking for hints about the plot.
One intriguing recent discovery came from an observant MuggleNet staffer who noticed Mary Lou Barebone, leader of the Second Salemers (which is basically out to expose and eradicate the wizarding community), shares a last name with Bartholomew Barebone, the 1790s-era Scourer descendant who tried to expose the wizarding community. That near exposure led to Rappaport’s Law, the prohibition on wizards and No-Majs associating that’s still in effect in the 1920s.
Last Friday, we also got this clip thanks to Colin Farrell’s appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, which features just a teensy bit more of the voiceover we heard from Auror Percival Graves in one of the trailers – and reveals the exchange is happening while Graves questions Scamander:
