Every Sunday morning we showcase a classic comic cover, complete with compelling commentary, for your cordial contemplation. It’s the Classic Comic Cover Corner!
Adventure Comics #399 – November 1970
Cover Art by Mike Sekowsky and Dick Giordano
In honor of Super Bowl XLVII (that’s 47 for our non-roman readers) this Sunday’s classic comic cover comes from Adventure Comics #399, which features a sexy Supergirl, complete with a 1970’s style mini-dress and thigh-high boots. She’s giving football player Johnny Dee the “what-for” after he threw the big game. How humiliating – if only superheroes were always around to call out our sports heroes when they screw up.
Yes, Supergirl should probably be taking on more Earth-shattering calamities than a player cheating on a football game, but darn it, the Kryptonian cutie likes her some football! In the story titled “Johnny Dee — Hero-Bum,” Supergirl actually helps out the team by busting a group of gambling gangsters who threaten to kill Johnny’s girlfriend unless he takes a dive.
Speaking of the Super Bowl and Kryptonians, here’s hoping we see a new Man of Steel trailer during today’s game. At the very least a new Iron Man 3 trailer is scheduled. Go Ravens!
