The Arizona Science Center and ASU’s BEYOND Center for Fundamental Concepts in Science are teaming up to bring bestselling author Lucy Hawking — daughter of the famous theoretical physicist and cosmologist Stephen Hawking — to the Valley this weekend to answer questions like “Could humans live on another planet?” “What kind of music do aliens like?” “Can you gargle in space?” and “Where should we go in space and why?”
“Cosmic Treasure Hunt,” the 2010 annual Science Fact Meets Science Fiction Lecture, will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5, at the Arizona Science Center’s Dorrance Planetarium. The event is free with paid general admission ($12 adults, $10 children and free to members) and is recommended for ages 8 and above.

Leave planet Earth and experience the wonders of our cosmic environment through manned space flights to the Moon, surfing the Solar System on an asteroid and witnessing the explosion of a supernova. The goal of ‘The Cosmic Treasure Hunt’ is to explore our knowledge of the Universe, what we know about it and how we know about it, how our knowledge is our greatest asset and how physics plays a role in learning more. Hawking will use optical astronomy to show what we can see of the Universe, and explain how we can listen to the Universe through radio astronomy.
