Allons-y! David Tennant and Catherine Tate return for Tenth Doctor audio adventures

It’s been rumored for a while now, but on Monday Big Finish Productions made it official: David Tennant and Catherine Tate will appear in a series of official Doctor Who audio adventures featuring the Tenth Doctor and Donna Noble.

The full-cast Tenth Doctor audio adventures will kick off in May 2016 with “Technophobia,” “Time Reaver” and “Death and the Queen.” You can read descriptions of each story over at Doctor Who News or at Big Finish’s official website. (A U.S. digital bundle will set you back $25 on pre-order, and there’s a lovely limited-edition boxed set available as well.)

The Doctor-Donna relationship is remembered fondly by many fans, and the wibbly-wobbly circumstances of Ms. Noble’s heartbreaking farewell in the TV series mean she can (probably) never return in the show’s normal timeline. So, a dip back into “unseen” past adventures during their all-too-brief companionship is about all we can hope for. And we’ll take it!

A little history

Tennant actually performed in Big Finish’s Who range as various characters before taking up the role of the Doctor himself on television in 2005. The audio adventures began in 1999 with Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy reprising their TV roles as the Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Doctors, respectively. Paul McGann then joined the fray as the Eighth Doctor, who only got one TV movie outing in 1996 but later got the regeneration scene he deserved in a prequel to the 50th anniversary TV special and still continues to star in Big Finish adventures.

This was all at a time when the TV series was in a state of suspended animation since it left airwaves in 1989 before returning in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston in the starring role for just one season, before Tennant took over. Eventually, Tom Baker joined the Big Finish troupe as his enduringly popular scarf-garbed Fourth Doctor. More recent developments have included the addition of Alex Kingston as River Song and John Hurt as the War Doctor.

Will you be boarding the TARDIS for the new Tenth Doctor audio adventures? (Or are you holding out for Matt Smith?)
