BIG DADDY FROM TAKE-TWO’S BIOSHOCK
It’s official. Take-Two’s critically acclaimed video game BioShock is being adapted into a live-action movie. Universal Pictures, director Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean), and screenwriter John Logan (The Aviator, Gladiator) will bring the creepy, underwater thriller to life, complete with Big Daddies and Little Sisters of course.
Normally I wouldn’t get excited about a video game being turned into a movie since most of the previous efforts…well…sucked. But 2007’s multi-award-winning video game BioShock is not like most video games. It rocks! Check out my review of the game for more info.
LITTLE SISTER (IN FOREGROUND) FROM TAKE-TWO’S BIOSHOCK
BioShock, which was largely inspired by Ayn Rand’s classic Atlas Shrugged, is a truly unique video game that is so well rounded, it’s practically cinema-ready. The story of eccentric genius Andrew Ryan’s failed underwater utopia called Rapture, with its crazy, genetically mutated humans and bio-mechanical monsters is perfectly suited for the big screen.
The unique characters, like hulking Big Daddies who protect zombie-like Little Sisters, and the decaying art deco environments are rich with a level detail not seen in most video games, or movies for that matter. It’s no wonder the game won almost all of the game-of-the-year awards in 2007.
So far, BioShock has sold more than 2 million copies and Take-Two is working on a sequel. Developer 2K Marin will be working on the project with Ken Levine, who designed BioShock. Look for BioShock 2 to hit stories in Q4 2009.
