The Alien franchise is still clinging to life like a newborn face-hugger.

Variety reports that Ridley Scott, the director of the groundbreaking 1979 sci-fi horror film starring Sigourney Weaver, is on board to direct a prequel written by rising star John Spaihts.

Three sequels — Aliens, Alien3 and Alien Resurrection — followed the saga of Ellen Ripley (Weaver) and her inextricable link to a lethal alien life form that has a gut-wrenching reproductive cycle.

Recent crossovers with the Predator films saw moderate box-office and home-video success, but were panned by critics.
