Martian epic John Carter fails to impress U.S. moviegoers

Disney’s John Carter had a disappointing $30 million opening weekend at the U.S. box office, but overseas moviegoers were more accepting of the American sci-fi template whose adventures, penned 100 years ago by Tarzan creator Edgar Rice Burroughs, have influenced such franchises as Star Wars and Avatar.

International receipts reportedly push the film’s receipts so far above $100 million.
