A long-teased American version of the BBC’s streaming iPlayer on-demand service will be designed specifically for Apple’s iPad, according to a report from Airlock Alpha. International hits Doctor Who and Torchwood will be among the programs offered. But it will not be free: A subscription model is planned, with some free sections supported by advertising … and opt-in data mining.
Currently, U.S. viewers who attempt to use the iPlayer get a message saying the content is not available due to rights issues — a phenomenon sometimes referred to as “geoblocking.” There are, however, ways to get around it with proxy substitution using browser extensions.
