If you missed it on BBC America — or, like me, miss watching it on the lower-tier Sci Fi Channel — the 2008 Doctor Who Christmas special is now available to download from Apple’s iTunes Store. “The Next Doctor” costs $1.99 and presents the itinerant Time Lord with an interesting dilemma: meeting himself.
Here’s part of the episode description:
It’s Christmas Eve in 1851 and Cybermen stalk the snow of Victorian London. When the Doctor arrives and starts to investigate a spate of mysterious deaths, he’s surprised to meet another Doctor, and soon the two must combine forces to defeat the ruthless Miss Hartigan. But are two Doctors enough to stop the rise of the CyberKing?
Doctor Who eschewed a regular season this year, producing instead a series of specials like the annual yuletide romp. A fifth season will start early next year, with a new actor in the Doctor’s shoes: Matt Smith (pictured, below) is set to replace David Tennant, who is making his first trip to San Diego Comic-Con later this month.
But there are rumblings that Tennant and executive producer Russell T. Davies will use the convention to announce a Doctor Who feature film that would star Tennant in the role he has played to great acclaim since 2005.
Suddenly, there are a lot of Doctors running around.
