Start the countdown! Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald will be in theaters a year from today.
As the one-year mark before the second installment in the Fantastic Beasts franchise is released, Thursday was a natural choice for Pottermore to reveal the film’s name and the first promotional photo of the cast.

The photo features the four heroes from the first film: wizards Newt Scamander (played by Eddie Redmayne), Tina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston) and Queenie Goldstein (Alison Sudol), plus No-Maj Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler). (Jacob’s memory of what happened during Fantastic Beasts was erased at the end of the first installment, though the last scene suggested he does have some kind of recollection of his adventures. We’ll see how much comes back to him)
We also see:
- Grindelwald, reprised by Johnny Depp
- A young Albus Dumbledore, portrayed for the first time by Jude Law
- Credence (Ezra Miller), the Obscurus who appeared to have been blown apart at the end of the first film
- Theseus Scamander (Callum Turner), Newt’s older brother, who was described as a war hero in the first movie
- Leta Lestrange (Zoë Kravitz), who is described in the Pottermore piece as Theseus’s fiancee. (The first movie briefly referred to her as someone who was close to Newt at school, and suggested the relationship between the two wasn’t left on the best terms. And suggested the Lestrange family raised some eyebrows even in Newt’s time.)
- A “Maledictus” played by Claudia Kim. Pottermore describes a Maledictus only as “someone who suffers from a ‘blood curse’ that turns them into a beast.”
Pottermore has also revealed the second film will include Nicolas Flamel (Brontis Jodorowsky), Dumbledore’s associate and the only known owner of an elixir of life-producing Philosopher’s Stone, who was referenced in the first Harry Potter book; Carmen Ejogo reprising her role as MACUSA President Seraphina Picquery; Daily Show correspondent Jessica Williams appearing in an as-yet-unnamed role; and characters with the surnames Travers and Rosier, which were later last names of Death Eaters.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald will be in theaters Nov. 16, 2018.
