D&D premium reprints continue with the ‘White Box’ that started it all

Dungeons & Dragons White Box

Wizards of the Coast may recently have made its Dungeons & Dragons digital archives available for sale after several years’ absence, but that doesn’t mean they have transcended the physical world. Continuing a tradition that began last year with premium reprints of its 1st Edition AD&D and 3.5 revision hardcover manuals, the Hasbro subsidiary and successor to TSR this fall will sell a deluxe edition of the original “White Box” from 1974.

The release date is Nov. 19, 2013, and the retail price is $149.99. Here’s the company’s official description of what it gets you:

Dungeons & Dragons White BoxThe original Dungeons & Dragons boxed set was published by TSR, Inc. in 1974 and was the very first roleplaying game, introducing concepts that have persisted throughout later editions. It included three small rules booklets in a white box.

This deluxe, premium reprint of the original “White Box” features new packaging and includes the following seven booklets:

  • Volume 1: Men & Magic
  • Volume 2: Monsters & Treasure
  • Volume 3: Underworld & Wilderness Adventures
  • Supplement I: Greyhawk
  • Supplement II: Blackmoor
  • Supplement III: Eldritch Wizardry
  • Supplement IV: Gods, Demi-Gods & Heroes

Each booklet features new cover art but is otherwise a faithful reproduction of the original, including original interior art.

That’s not the only deluxe reprint that’s in the works: Later this month the 1st Edition rules expansion Unearthed Arcana will get the same treatment as the core handbooks, and March will see the release of Dungeons of Dread, a hardcover compilation of four classic AD&D adventure modules: Tomb of Horrors, White Plume Mountain, Expedition to the Barrier Peaks and The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth.
