Publisher Oni Press and writer/artist Bryan Lee O’Malley have confirmed the release date for the sixth and final volume of the Scott Pilgrim series. Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour will hit shelves July 20th. Just in time to get it signed at Comic-Con!

The award-winning series follows the misadventures of twentysomething slacker Scott Pilgrim. I’d heard about Scott Pilgrim for years, but never picked it up for some reason. No one could really tell me what it was about, just that it was funny and awesome.

When I finally gave it a shot, I found out why it’s so difficult to sum up. It’s a absolutely unique and delightful mash-up of old-school video games, music, kung-fu, sci-fi and romantic comedy, with an emphasis on the comedy. There’s not really a lot of laugh-out-loud comics out there in the market today, but Scott Pilgrim is definitely one, and probably the best of them.

O’Malley jumps genres without a pause. He mixes and combines a variety of influences, creating a world so unique and vibrant that the reader is swept up in it. You don’t even hesitate when the story takes a sudden weird bend, you just gleefully follow it into absurdity.

I have to say that I love O’Malley’s artwork. His style is simple, almost basic even, but it works quite well within the story. Despite his non-flashy style, I can honestly say that he’s one of my favorite artists out there. He’s become a much stronger artist and visual storyteller with each volume.

The series has even been adapted into a film, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, starring Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and directed by Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead). It’s scheduled to hit theaters August 13th. There’s still a pretty tight lid on information from the movie, but reports from early screenings are extremely positive. Given the strength of the source material, combined with Wright’s proven genre-smashing chops, I’m confident that it’s going to be excellent.

  • Awesome. I love the Scott Pilgrim series and I’m really excited for the movie. I’ve given a few of the books to other people – non comic book readers – and they all really like it. It’s fun to introduce people to such a unique and cool book. +100 XP for everyone!
