Famed comic book artist Michael Turner recently passed away after a struggle with cancer. Turner broke into comics in the late 90’s working for Image comics where he developed his own creator owned title, Fathom. He eventually left Image and founded his own studio Aspen MLT. He was most recognized for his beautiful work on covers. Both DC and Marvel called upon him to draw the covers to their most notable books, including recent “event” books such as Identity Crisis for DC and Marvel’s Civil War. He had a very distinctive style of art, when you saw a piece done by Michael Turner, it was immediately recognizable. Unfortunately, this is becoming an increasingly rare distinction for cover artists in comics nowadays. He possessed an undeniable talent, comic book fans and the industry as a whole are certainly poorer for his loss.
Michael Turner was a brilliant artist. His unique style was dynamic, exciting and full of gorgeous detail. I’ve bought a ton of comic books simply because of his amazing cover art. One of my favorite works of his was the run he did on Superman/Batman. He illustrated the entire six-issue “Supergirl from Krypton” story arc and blew my mind with his beautiful artwork. I’ll never forget him and what he’s done to advance the comic book medium.
