OK, I’ll admit it. I’ve never played Half Life. I’m mainly a console gamer since I gave up my PC years ago for the superior Mac technology. Of course life is full of tradeoffs. In giving up my PC, and in effect PC games (Mac doesn’t do video games all that well, although they are getting better), I missed out on what I’ve heard is one of the best first-person shooters ever. Today I get to catch up on the past and delve into the future with The Orange Box, which makes it’s debut on the Xbox 360.
This might be the greatest bargain ever for gamers. The Orange Box is five different games for the price ($60) of one. New games include Half Life 2: Episode Two, Portal and Team Fortress 2, plus full versions of the previously released Half Life 2 and Half Life 2: Episode One. While I’m psyched to get into a new sci-fi shooter, I’m most excited about Portal. It’s a single player game where you have to solve puzzles and challenges by opening portals to maneuver objects and yourself through space. Sure it’s not the same as blasting aliens with a shotgun or laser, but puzzle games are always fun, especially when they have beautiful graphics and innovative gameplay.

I bought the Orange Box yesterday for my computer. I’ve been playing some Team Fortress and I LOVE it! So much fun. My experience with first person shooters has been limited to some Counterstrike and Battlefield, but I think I’ll be playing a lot more now. Portal came out today, I’m going to give it a look after work. I ordered yesterday with a “pre-order” deal and got the whole package for 45 clams! So awesome.
