According to the Hollywood Reporter, Robert Carlyle, star of Trainspotting and The Full Monty, has been cast as the lead in the upcoming Sci Fi Channel series Stargate Universe.

A native of Scotland, Carlyle also appeared in the recent Fox TV movie 24: Redemption. He took a villainous turn in the Pierce Brosnan “James Bond” movie The World is Not Enough and in the film adaptation of Christopher Paolini’s book Eragon.

Production on the series is slated to begin in February in Vancouver, Canada. It is set to launch in the summer with a two-hour premiere.

quotemarks.jpgDescribed as edgier, darker and younger-skewing than its predecessors, Universe follows a group of soldiers, scientists and civilians left to fend for themselves when forced through a Stargate after their hidden base comes under attack. The survivors, who emerge aboard an ancient ship missing in the far reaches of space, are led by Dr. David Rush (Carlyle), who works to unlock the ship’s mysteries and return the group home, but who also might have ulterior motives.

Stargate SG-1 had teams of Air Force explorers visiting other planets through portals called Stargates that were built by the advanced Ancients, and Stargate Atlantis had modern humans taking up residence in an abandoned Ancient city in the Pegasus Galaxy. The final two episodes of Atlantis return after a winter hiatus, with the series finale airing Jan. 9.

  • Stargate Atlantis is the only decent SCI-Fi left on TV – glad to hear they’re coming up with another spinoff – sounds like it might be pretty good…
